*Chapter book for 7 to 10 year olds, with illustrations
*A ferret as the main character
*Rating: Kids will love this book, and some will be able to read it on their own. Younger children may need help, but parents won’t mind reading it–there’s a ton of humor in it! Cute book, especially for ferret lovers/owners out there.

Short, short summary:Debbie the ferret comes to live with Andrew in an apartment–15 stories high. At first, she is very confused by her new environment. Why does her owner want to play while she wants to sleep? Why does he sleep all night when she wants to play? She soon learns the ways of humans and the fun animals can have when humans are at work, thanks to Charlie, Andrew’s cat, who befriends Debbie and helps her navigate through the day. Animals may be mad at their owners after reading this book–it reveals the secrets animals have been trying to keep from us for decades! :)

So, what do I do with this book?

1. After reading Debbie, students may want to write about their own pets (or pets they know) in first person, like Conny Manero did about Debbie the ferret. Students can write “A Day in the Life of _______” and then pretend they are their pet and write a cute story about what the pet does when the humans are at work and school.

2. Fill out a KWL chart about ferrets. What do students know about ferrets? What do they wonder about ferrets? After reading this book, what did they learn? Then take it a step further, who in the class thinks having a ferret would work for their family? Would ferrets make a good pet?

3. Some animals are nocturnal. That’s the problem Debbie is having when she first goes to Andrew’s house. She wants to sleep during the day and play/eat at night. You can use this book for a fun way to introduce the vocabulary word NOCTURNAL to students, and then with students, make a list of other animals that are nocturnal.
